Over the course of the next year, we'll be describing the history of the Coral Reef baseball program since its inception in 1997, and honor the contributions that the booster club, the players, and the coaches have made to the program.

Stay tuned for further announcements. If you have some memories you'd like to share, please e-mail the Webmaster at the address below.

Quick Facts About the Baseball Program

2004-2005

The President of the Booster Club for 2004-05 was again Dave McDonald, assisted by Vice Presidents Kevin Maggiore and Mo Blanco, Secretary Eileen Parsons, and Treasurer Teresa Peterson. (Ms. Peterson's son, Brian, resigned from high school baseball during the year, and Mr. McDonald took over the Treasurer's duties for the balance of the term.) Wes Parsons continued as Webmaster.

The Booster Club's fundraising allowed the club to continue past programs, and enhance the physical plant. The club helped fund the varsity's trip to Atlanta, Georgia, and financed the refurbishing of the batting cage, and some improvements to the seating areas, and new screening for the field. Coach Biz was able to secure the district's help in aerating and treating the outfield. Dave McDonald took over the task of obtaining approval of the electric plans, which were returned (again) with issues from the county. Kevin Maggiore added a gate from the drivers' education lot to the baseball field, allowing the club to open the lot as surfaced parking for all games, a vast improvement over parking in the soggy field on the eastern side of the school.

The website expanded considerably, with the addition of many photographs, the posting of club minutes and a club membership directory, a page for game results and statistics, and a page for alumni and player signings. For the third time, the entire yearbook was posted online, this time with a handy index.

One of the highlights of the booster club year was the golf tournament held at Miccosukee Golf & Country Club, a project spearheaded by Tom Prongay. Both on the level of a golf tournament and a fundraising event, it was a great success. Appearing at the vent were Eli Marrero and Oscar "El Duque" Hernandez. The club continued with a successful year book, the chief fundraising venture, and also did two days parking cars at Miami-Homestead Motor Speedway, a garage sale, a car wash (Mo Blanco's project), and many evenings working the concession stand at Mark Light Stadium.

The Spring varsity trip to Atlanta was a highlight of the 2004-05 year. The Coral Reef varsity baseball team embarked for its spring trip to Atlanta on Friday, March 18. The trip to Georgia offered the team an opportunity to test its skills against some quality teams in preparation for the second half of the district schedule. It also offers our players some exposure to colleges and universities who would not ordinarily see the team play. On Saturday, March 19 the team traveled to Roswell, Georgia to play the 11th ranked team in the country, the undefeated Roswell Hornets. Kenny Tyson pitched a gem but came up on the wrong side of a 3-0 game. Sunday was an off day and team took a visit to watch Georgia Tech play North Carolina State in Atlanta. Afterward, the team spent a little leisure time at Atlanta's "Underground." Monday the Barracudas visited Columbia High School where Chris Jimenez pitched the team to a 12-3 victory. Mo Blanco hit his first varsity homerun. On Tuesday the rains came and the game against Chamblee High School was canceled. Wednesday cleared and the Barracudas traveled to Brookwood High School for a doubleheader. The Barracudas dropped game one to Brookwood 7-3, but came back in the nightcap to defeat Central High School of Carrollton by a score of 17-2. The victory earned Coach Bisceglia is 200th career win, which highlighted the trip.

Senior Kenny Tyson will attend St. Thomas University, in Miami, and senior Chad Lambert will attend Nova Southeastern University, in Davie. Both will play baseball in college.

The varsity had a record of 10 wins and 13 losses. The junior varsity had their best year ever, going 13-4-1. In the district tournament, the varsity lost to Palmetto 6 to 4 in 8 innings.

The seniors this year were Cameron Sforza-Flick, Adolfo Arenas, Dustin Patrick, Steven Grier, Ryan Ramsay, Kenny Tyson, Chad Lambert, and Brian Cournoyer

The Barracudas were very active during the fall of 2004. Coach Bisceglia and Coach Gonzalez ran conditioning and weight training activities while the Varsity and Junior Varsity played in the off-season. Assisting were Coach Tomas Duenas, a former player at Coral Gables under Coach Bisceglia-currently playing in the Anaheim Angels minor league system; Coach Alfredo Benavides, former Coral Reef player; Coach Mo Blanco; and Coach Leon Holladay.

Coach Bisceglia celebrated his 200th win against Central High School in the Atlanta trip.

Coach Blanco was an all-around assistant. He helped with the varsity practices and handling the JV assistant duties. Coach Blanco was also an active booster club Vice President. As a school certified coach, he is now considering a more active role in the future. His wife Miriam and daughter Lyzette have also committed to the Coral Reef program and help out at the concession stand regularly.

Coach Holladay has a deep history with the Coral Reef Barracudas. As a past president of the Barracuda Diamond Club, he has been here since the program’s inception. His son Jason also played for the Barracudas (Class of 2001). He is again the Head Junior Varsity coach this year, and coaches first base for the varsity.

Wayne Hendricks returned to the coaching staff this year. Coach Hendricks handles the third base coaching duties and works with the hitters on offense. He is also heavily involved with handling the infield defensive scheme for the Barracudas.

Coach Hector Gonzalez comes back to Coral Reef after a four year absence. As an assistant coach on Jim Cahill's staff, Hector was here when the program started in 1997. He spent the past four years as the Head Coach at Varela High School where he did an outstanding job getting that new program off the ground. He teaches AP American History.
