Minutes of the General Meeting of the
Coral Reef Diamond Club, Inc.
October 2, 2003
Introduction
The Coral Reef Diamond Club, Inc. (the "Club") is the booster club for the baseball team at Coral Reef Senior High School. A general meeting of the Club was duly called for 7:00 p.m. on October 2, 2003, in the media room at Coral Reef Senior High School. Notice was provided, and an agenda for the meeting was circulated, and it is attached to these minutes. Randy Flick, the outgoing President of the Club, called the meeting of the Club to order at 7:10 p.m. About 30 people attended the meeting. Mr. Flick introduced the new officers. The President is Dave McDonald. The Vice-Presidents are Karen Gayle, Kevin Maggiore, and Mo Blanco. The Treasurer is Teresa Petersen. The Secretary is Eileen Parsons.
Mr. Flick thanked the outgoing officers and board members. He advised the undersigned pro tem secretary that a copy of these minutes should be forwarded to the athletic director of Coral Reef Senior High School, as well as to the principal, the officers, and the baseball coach.
Financial Statement
Mr. Flick briefly reviewed the financial statement of the Club, which is being prepared and which will be turned over to the new officers.
Mr. Flick noted that the Club had spent about $2,000 less than the previous year, but had also raised about $5,000 less. The chief fund-raisers were camps and clinics, followed by the concession stand. On the expense side, field maintenance consumed about $8,000 last year. The production of the yearbook showed a net loss of about 14% to the club. Selling more advertisements would enhance the profitability of the yearbook. The sale of banners broke even. On the positive side, the garage sale was conducted at no cost to the Club, and netted several thousand dollars. Assisting at the Homestead Racetrack netted approximately $2,100, again with no expense. The banquet lost money, but was not intended to be a profit-center.
Currently the Club has about $17,000 in its account, of which $14,000 is earmarked for improvements to the electrical service to the dug-out, the concession stand, the batting cage, and the sprinkler pump. The Club is attempting to obtain the permits so that work in this regard can commence. Mr. Flick pointed out that the club had to be mindful of Title IX and ensure equitable expenditures that also benefit women's sports.
Mr. Flick then turned the meeting over to Dave Bisceglia, the coach of the baseball team.
Coach Bisceglia discussed the possibilities of high school players obtaining college scholarships. He pointed out that colleges have 25 full scholarships for football players, but only 11.7 for baseball players. Full scholarships are therefore rare. One former varsity player from last year is now playing baseball at Emory University.
Coach Bisceglia hopes to take the varsity squad to Southeast Louisiana State University for 8 to9 days to play 8 other teams in a tournament. Coach Bisceglia also intends to arrange a weekend trip for a doubleheader at Royal Palm Beach.
Coach Bisceglia expects to expand the junior varsity schedule to 19 games over 9 weeks.
Coach Bisceglia discussed the state of the baseball equipment at the high school. The mower, which had been broken, has been fixed. The porta-potties cost $80 per month, a substantial expenditure. The field itself needs substantial maintenance, and several thousand dollars a year is budgeted just for the basics for the field. Coach Bisceglia pointed out that more people are needed to help cut the field and the surrounding area. Several parents volunteered for this.
Coach Bisceglia is working on a budget for the upcoming year, but it is not yet completed.
Issues were discussed concerning unauthorized people using the field for riding go-carts and pick-up baseball. Security issues were discussed.
Fall Training
Coach Bisceglia confirmed that by October 8, 2003, all players needed their physical exam and insurance and other paperwork completed. The physical must be dated after July 9, 2003. Insurance is mandatory for baseball and other athletic activities.
Coach Bisceglia cannot himself coach baseball on the field until January 26, 2004. There may be some CABA-type practices and tournaments in Fall 2003. These activities may start on October 12, 2003.
Coach Bisceglia confirmed that the school eligibility requirement for playing on athletic activities is a grade point average of 2.0.
Coach Bisceglia discussed stress and time management skills for baseball players. He discussed the importance of developing character and a positive personality.
Fund-raising
On the reverse of the agenda attached hereto is a proposed fund-raising request and agenda. All of the items were discussed by Coach Bisceglia.
A motion was made to print fliers for yearbook sales, which passed. Coach Bisceglia indicated that he would go ahead and produce fliers for the yearbook.
There was a suggestion made to set up competitions among the players, or among the teams, to enhance the sales of yearbooks, and this was discussed.
A motion was made to create a committee to assist with fund-raising, and in particular with yearbook sales. There was no second to the motion. The incoming president, Mr. McDonald, indicated that such a committee would likely be formed.
It was also pointed out that the students are now allowed to handle money in the fund-raising activities. Previously, adults had to handle the money.
Finally, the secretary of the Club was asked to compile a membership list, consisting of the names of the parents, their telephone numbers, and their e-mail addresses.
At 9:15 p.m., a motion was made to adjourn, which passed by acclamation.
